E4-Misfits Audience and why successful
Misfits’, which follows a set of unlikely superheroes, was the most- watched multichannel programme yesterday (11 November), with a 6.3% share of the TV-watching audience between 10pm and 11pm.
According to Channel 4, nearly 600,000 viewers were in E4’s target demographic of 16- to 34-year-olds and the programme took a 16.9% share among the age group. The share among 16- to 24-year-olds was 28.2%.
But is there a silver lining to all of this? BBC3, ITV2 and especially E4 are increasingly being seen as pinnacles of innovation and creativity, with young audiences somewhat introducing the online viewing, webisode watching, multi-platform viewing habits most now use every day. Skins, despite not being sci-fi or fantasy, is responsible for so much in terms of online activity that supports today’s television, and the same practices of offering online content that complements the main show have helped make shows like Misfits big hits. This is because it is a very gritty british drama which attracts younger viewers due to the characters being based around modern era as the characters represents the youth society as energetic, lively and ruthless creating a sense of life being driven into them as programmes like these where action is taking place it reflects society, so therefore with my project it would represent the youth society as how misfits portrays there.
Silver-Linings Production
Off the 3 given briefs i have decided to go with brief one, which was silver lining productions. The brief clearly indicates that silver lining production is a multi media production that is successful with fly on the wall documentaries and fiction programmes. However since it being pre-watershed my audience is around 15-35 years old as it is a mature programme with adult humour. However i need to choose another task which is prinitng. I believe this would link to the silver linings prodcution because it is film based as creating a poster would be a still image of the whole film summed up such as films being postered on billboards which is useful and appropriate.
From the work i have done, i have researched channel prodcution where my product can be based on and why, also other comparisons of films which have the same genre to my film production and the demographics which can help me expand my understanding. The main thing to concentrate on is the audience, if its is relevant and if it will succeed due to looking at other similar programmes. I decided to do this as it is interesting and diffrentiated.
Jumping on the bandwagon of revamping old TV shows, this big screen version of the show from the late 80s/early 90s that is mostly remembered as being a springboard for Johnny Depp's career, is a slap-dash buddy movie with a puerile streak. I never saw the TV series, so it is difficult to know whether or not the film's tone is anything like the original series, but the basic concept is the same - two youthful cops are recruited to go undercover in high school.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play the nerdy, bright Schmidt and the handsome, slow-witted Jenko who first meet at high-school, where they are diametrical opposites. When they meet again at Police Academy, they have more time for each other and become buddies; Schmidt helps Jenko academically, while Jenko encourages Schmidt physically. After an incompetent and failed drug-bust, the deflated duo are transferred undercover and sent back to high-school to identify the supplier and distributor of a new dangerous party drug that is spreading like wild-fire.
None of it believable, of course and Hill and Tatum have their new identities switched, with the mathematical whiz being sent to drama class and sports and the athletic dumbbell finding himself in chemistry class. The humour is pretty lame, so leave your brain at the door, but there are some funny juxtapositions - like the stretch limo chase scene and the madcap sequence in which Hill, dressed like Peter Pan and Tatum, dressed like a chemical equation are making their escape from a gang of bikies.
Ice Cube plays Captain Dickson, the self-declared black angry man in charge of the undercover agents and Dave Franco (younger brother of James, and looking just like him) is the school's drug supplier. Brie Larson is likeable as Molly, the object of Schmidt's desires who returns his feelings, but has to wait for him to pluck up the courage to follow through.
It's funny and entertaining enough to make a difference as the idea that the two unlikely buddies rub off on each other positively is not all bad as this is a humorous side to action thriller which makes it more exciting.
This is another film i would compare to my brief given to me as it is a successful choice with many films with simlar genre being produced like this more oftenly in this genration, as it appeals more due to being entertaining and thrilling. Therefore with not many programmes as this it would make it more interesting as making a trailer of it would leave the audience in suspense as it will be unique. Using the comparisons will help me plan my project and improve my knowledge on how to produce it.

ITV
ITV is the UK’s largest commercial TV station, offering advertisers unparalleled volumes of audiences from all key demographics. Just to give you a taste, so far in 2014 ITV has shown:
The most watched programme on any channel
The most watched comedy, soap, new drama series, sport and entertainment programme.
We like to believe we are at the heart of popular culture and are the only commercial channel to regularly attract big, big audiences (up to 13 million viewers!). In the first half of 2014, the top 172 commercial programmes were on ITV. ITV accounts for 97.8% of commercial programmes attracting more than 5m viewers. From this research i can tell that it is the channel of most watched comedy which is relevant and appropraite to my brief and film as this is a relevant solution to broadcast on. As you can tell it can appeal to a large amount of customers as it can attract over 5 million viewers which is impressive and shows its popularity nationally and reigonally.
Another fact i found was that 69% of 16-34s reached to ITV2 which is paret of ITV, so therefore as it is still part of ITV, ITV2 would be the best option as majority of people who watch ITV2 fit my target audience. Here is more of my research that i found out. ITV2 is home to to some of the most diverse and innovative content around, featuring a mix of entertainment, movies, music, comedy and drama. However the channel has a strong presence online where viewers can catch up and also on social media networks with almost half a million followers on twitter. Another interesting fact is that it was digital channel of the year showing its presence and popularity amongst viewers.
Each week the channel reaches 40% of the TV viewing population, That’s 20.4m Adults and 6m 16-34 Adults. In 2013 the channel grew for the 11th year in a row in terms of share and saw some successful new programme launches.

Therefore i believe using this concept will make my action/comedy film effective and exciting as this research below will tell me that it will appeal to a younger audience to middle-aged males as it is young and funky which we can relate to our generation now which violence and action is seen upon excting and thrilling. Therefore this is a good comparison to judge to as it is well-know action comedy films that have highly done successful and has taken interest by 15-30 where "street smart" is a factor to work on to engange with the target audience.
So to present my series of programmes i have used the idea and plot of Rush Hour and Bad Boys so people understand what it is about and a series would make it more intersting as they see more of it. So to broadcrast my series i would have either E4 or ITV. Firstly E stands for Entertainment in E4 as it is part of channel 4. This would be a relevant channel production to broadcrast my show as it is entertaining and the audience is for young adults to middle aged. Here is my research on the target audience E4 appeal to. E4 is the entertainment destination for a cutting edge young audience
As you can see 52% is between the target audience im trying to appeal to so this is very appropriate as majority of people who watch E4 watch programmes such as misfits which is a very popular programme that entices younger viewers especially as it is about young adults so the generation present now feel more involved watching a programme about teenagers or young adults as they feel they can connect towards them.
Research
I have decided to do brief 1 which is sliver lining productions and create an action/comedy film as i have found similar films/programmes that i can compare to.
The other films i looked at that that i can compare to is Rush hour series of films and Bad Boys which had a series of films.
For those who can get past the senseless slaughter of an indigenous culture between 14-29 male is the target audience of Bad Boys II. There are multiple belly laughs and a few fascinating stunt sequences. Had there simply been a touch more moderation. From my research i was able to understand that Bad Boys viewers were majority of males as it intrigued them with the violence. action and comedy which appealed to especially younger viewers but middle aged men. The aspect of homour makes it more brightening as it adds some life into the film and make its more interesting as without comedy, it would be taken not that realistic.
"This introduces the main genre of the film quickly, drawing the interest of the intended “young, funky, style-conscious, street-smart generation” demographic. The Bad Boys 2 trailer looks to have a great deal of action, with some very fast-paced car chases and more guns than people. However, more action generally implies less room for character development thereby appealing to younger, action-seeking viewers".
Another comparison is Rush Hour. Rush Hour 2 was released August 3, 2001 to mixed reviews from critics, but it grossed $347,325,802 at the worldwide box office, becoming the eleventh highest-grossing film of 2001 worldwide. It is the highest-grossing live-action martial arts film of all time, and the second highest-grossing martial arts film of all time. This again was an action/comedy using two genres to make a film more effective andf appeal widely to everyone. However as it was successful there were 3 films made of rush hour on how poluar and different it was to other films a decade ago and now it seems to be a popular choice which people like to watch and enjoy.
Using this film concept i would make my programme using this concept to make it a programme series for my certain target audience on a certain channel production.

Universal- By showing our planet, Earth, in their logo, Universal straight away suggests that they are't afraid to take on the whole world with their movies, linking also to the name 'Universal' meaning that their films should be suitable for a vast range of audiences, in this case, everyone. The Earth symbol could also suggest that Universal's films are seen as 'out of this world', also suggested by the space background, suggesting that their films provide the ultimate satisfaction to take their audience up and away from what they know and show them something new. It also shows that they are not afraid to take risks and achieve the best they can by aiming for such high goals. The font uses a 3D text effect which shows that Universal are a company who are trying different technological and visual techniques and want to create the best, most up-to-date and modern features possible. Also a galaxy is shown idnicating they are acheieving new things and their objectives are always to achieve beyong the mark.
Dreamworks- By showing a kid on the moon could refer to the context the film company is aming at which is young children. This therefore shows they are fishing for their dreams below on earth asthe sky making the audience intrigue. The symbol of sitting on the moon represents how they are achieving goals that people believe they cannot reach which shows they intend to create films that are out of this world represing the clouds and moon as they try to go above and beyond. With the logo dreamworks highlight they as a company always make believe as in the name dreams work showing nothing is impposible by standing out from their competition. Also Dreamworks is in bold showing they are confident on taking challenges as dreams try to help you succeed what you want. The colours used make it look like a dream and the effect of mist depicting a dream.
Paramount- By showing the mountain is indicating there ambitions are always high and at the peak with stars surrounding them, depicting there production as fascinating showing their status is high as stars symbolise purity and a heavenly feeling showing their films have a sense of self-fufillment. As the mountain is mount everest this tells us they are trying to achieve the impossible which reveals there preserverence.
Here is my logo design which is silver lining productions. Silver Lining productions are film producers who make films from a range of all ages. However silver lining prodcutions genres are mainly action, comedy and thriller. This is because these threes are the most popular and important ones. The target audience for silver lining productions is based around young adults and older men and women around in ther mid 40's. This is because our type of production will appeal to them and they would find it interesting as it is not appropriate for younger viewers. In my silver lining prodcutions we are including the genre of action and comedy to make it humourous but anticipating with the action. This is because it will be different and show how silver lining productions can diverse two genres to make it even better than one. I chose my logo design like this is because if you keep it simple to the audience it will make it easier for them to memorise. However even though it is called silver lining productions it is black and gold. This is because it represents how professional they are showing that the films they produce are always high standard and top-notch. Instead of writing Silver lining using their first letters make it more appealing to intrigue the audience what this is and between them is a line represeting lining with production under neath. Gold indicates richness and prestige highlighting the status of the production dazzling the target audeince. The sparkles add more effect to the logo showing the fine detail but makes it memorising looking like stars as the quality is always the best from silver lining productions.
